This is a design I've been hankering to make from day one, I still can’t believe we’ve been able to make it happen.

The Carrera 2.7 RS Whiskey Tumbler pays homage to the car that started Porsche Rennsport, and to my eyes, one of the most iconic pieces of machinery on four wheels.

Created to satisfy the Group 4 rulebook, the RS was built at a time when racing had a direct influence on the cars manufacturers sold to the public. Porsche needed to produce 500 examples for homologation. Apparently, the sales director hated it, he thought they might manage to sell ten.

He was slightly wide of the mark.

Unveiled in 1972 and launched for the 1973 model year, the RS became the first Porsche to wear the Rennsport badge and the first 911 to carry the Carrera name. Demand quickly overwhelmed the original production target, with 1,580 cars eventually built.

The formula behind it was simple. Take the already capable 911, increase the engine capacity, remove weight and fix the aerodynamic shortcomings that had limited the earlier cars. Even the now-iconic ducktail wasn’t added for aesthetics. It was developed in the wind tunnel to reduce rear lift and make the car faster and more stable on track.

What Porsche created was more than a successful homologation special. The RS was focused enough to form the basis of a serious competition car, but still usable enough to be driven every day. That combination has defined the best Rennsport models ever since.

More than 50 years later, the performance has changed almost beyond recognition, but the idea hasn’t. Less weight, more power and an uncompromising focus on driving. Every RS to leave Stuttgart still owes something to the original.

Limited to a single production run of 911 individually serialised pieces, each supplied with unique Identification Plate, Information Booklet and Presentation Box featuring artwork by the incredibly talented Neil Gardner.

Once they’re gone, they're gone, there will never be a second batch.
